So many kids have ADHD or problems focusing, and as moms, we feel guilty about so much stuff with this diagnosis. Guilt about why their baby has this or if they really do have ADHD. Then there is the medication, guilt about whether or not your child should take it. If you are not keen on your child taking medication or, you want to help your child’s medication work better, I know of 5 essential oils for ADHD.
My son has ADHD, and I love that there are essential oils that can help him. Both with his actual diagnosis and with the things that come with it (like not sleeping very well because his brain won’t shut off). There are so many things that come with ADHD for so many kiddos. The lack of focus, the lack of sleep, the lack of paying attention and daydreaming. These essential oils can be so helpful for all of these things.
1. Focus Blend
This essential oil blend is amazing for kiddos that have ADHD to help them focus and support clear thinking processes at school or activities. And it is also helpful for anyone who just needs a little extra focus. I put it on my son’s bottoms of feet in the morning before he puts his socks on. And sometimes I put on the back of his neck.
Lots of times I have my son wear a diffuser bracelet so he can smell his oil throughout the day while he is at school. Here is one that my son likes to wear.
Also, you can put it on the back of your own neck when you need that extra boost of focus. This oil blend is not just for kids with adhd, but can also help you with focus. And help you pay attention if you have work to do.
2. Frankicense
Frankincense is awesome for so many things, (go read my other post about all the other things that frankincense can do). And it is one of the great essential oils for ADHD because it stimulates the limbic system of the brain (the part of the brain that deals with emotions).
If you put frankincense on the base of the skull, basically the back of the neck, you will stimulate this part of the brain so kids with ADHD will be able to control their emotions better, instead of their emotions going haywire and all willy-nilly. I think this is the coolest thing, basically frankincense can do what ADHD medications are doing to a kid’s brain, and no side effects.
Frankincense is also great for helping to relax. It can help calm your kiddo down. It can also help you as the mama with if you need to relax.
3. Lavender
Lavender is definitely one of those necessary essential oils for ADHD. It is calming and relaxing to the nervous system. So helpful for kiddos with ADHD, but also, anyone who needs some calming. Just put on the bottom of your kiddo’s feet before they go to bed. Since these kids always have their nervous system on overdrive, they need something to calm it down, especially at night when they need to go to sleep.
Lavender is helpful for sleep and I recommend putting it in a diffuser at night. This can help both you and your kiddo sleep. You can put it in each of the diffusers in your room and the kiddo’s room.
4. Vetiver
Vetiver is kind of like lavender, it is calming and relaxing. A great thing to do with vetiver is to put it in your kiddo’s diffuser at bedtime so they can smell it through the night(maybe with the lavender). If you do not have a diffuser then put vetiver on the feet or the back of the neck. I use this on my son every night and it calms down his little nerves so he can sleep.
5. Grounding Blend
You might remember this oil from my anxiety oils post, but this can also be used for kids with ADHD. Grounding blend is calming while encouraging courage and self esteem. I apply this to my son’s feet every morning, and he also wears it on a diffuser bracelet. If you want a diffuser bracelet for younger kids, this is a great one and one that my son wore when he is younger. You can look at it here.
It is important to remember that these kiddos with ADHD are very sensitive to odors and touch. So don’t force the oils on your kiddo or they will have a negative connotation with them. We have a lot of success with letting my son choose his own oils to use. He likes to have the power to use what oils he thinks he needs. Something that you should try also with your kiddos.
