I have had terrible allergies for years. I had tried all the medication, and I had found something that worked. But it made me jittery, jumpy, and cranky. And I could never sleep. And I lived this way for years. Until I found essential oils a couple years ago.
The number one reason I decided to try essential oils was strictly to help me with my allergies. And you know what, I have never ever used medication again for allergies. If you have allergies you are not alone, this article from the CDC says that more than 25% of people suffer from allergies. These are the best essential oils for allergies. And they are what I use every single day to keep my allergies under control.
Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon essential oil is definitely one of the necessary oils to help with allergies. It is great for thinning the mucous (sorry not to gross anyone out, but it is part of allergies!) so you aren’t sneezing all the time. It also helps with the cough that you tend to get with allergies (go to my blog post about oils to use for cough).
There are a few ways you can use lemon essential oil. The way I like to use it is to put on my throat and behind my ears, topically. Also, I will put a couple drops in water to help with the cleansing and getting all the allergy stuff out. I also use in another way so keep reading, and I have it at the end!
Lavender Essential Oil
We know that lavender is good for relaxing and sleep. But it is also very helpful for allergies because it is very soothing! Depending on what kind of allergies you have, lavender is always necessary for them. If you have skin allergies (like hives or a rash) then you need to put lavender on topically, right on the spot to get your skin soothed and the itching to stop. Lavender is also used for bug bites, which is actually an allergic reaction, so it makes sense that lavender soothes bug bites and helps with the itch!
I also use lavender on my itchy, watery eyes. I will just apply it around the eye (never in the eye). It soothes my eyes right away that are itchy and watering from allergies.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint is an oil that is used for so many things, like for nausea and to help with headaches. But, did you know that peppermint is also great for allergies? It opens the airways and it also opens the sinuses, to get all that allergy gunk to move along.
I love to put peppermint behind my ears so that I can open the tubes back there. Also I put on my sinuses to open them up also. But make sure you remember that peppermint is strong. So make sure you dilute it before putting on your sinuses.
Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint Together
So all three of these oils are great for allergies separately, but, they are so fabulous together. That is what I use everyday. The company I get my oils from actually has these three oils all together in a soft gel. So that is what I use everyday. But this is definitely not necessary. You can put two drops of each of these oils into water and drink. Or even put them into your own capsule.
Instead of ingesting the oils, you might want to make a roller ball bottle of the three oils to roll on the bottoms of your feet. The feet have the biggest pores so the oils will get into the system pretty quick. Plus, feet are not sensitive (I mean, we walk on them all day), so the oils won’t irritate that skin. I put the allergy blend recipe at the bottom of this post.
These are the rollerball bottles I use to put the oils on my feet!
These three oils are amazing for allergies, especially if you use them all together. And if you wanted a roller ball bottle of the allergy blend ready to go and handmade by me, go to my etsy site.
