So for years I did not go outside after dark in the summer! Why? Because there were always so many mosquitoes! For some reason mosquitoes, and all bugs really, just loved to bite me. Then I would have all kinds of bites that were itchy forever. And I hated using any of those synthetic bug repellents with all the chemicals in them, the not natural mosquito control bug spray. They just smelled so bad.
But then I discovered essential oils that just have an oil for everything! Including a natural mosquito control (and for other bugs also, but mosquitoes are the worst around here!). So basically a bug spray that I could use after dark that would keep the mosquitoes away, not smell bad, and not have all the bad chemicals in it.
So I want to show you the great essential oils I use to keep those pesky mosquitoes from biting me. And then if I do get a bite, since I sometimes forget the bug spray. I tell you all about the essential oils to use to keep those bites from itching.

The Main Mosquito Repellant Blend
So there is a good quality bug repellant that my essential oil company makes. So of course this has to be the first oil blend that I talk about for natural mosquito control. You do not have to get the one from my company, but I just know it is good quality and I know from experience, that it works.
It is all that we use in our household. And it is safe for those kiddos! I have also got for everyone is my family to use. Like my aunts and uncles. They love that it smells good and it works to keep those mosquitoes (and other bugs) away from them.
The repellant blend comes in a spray bottle from my essential oil company so it is very convenient. But if you get the oil from somewhere else or decide you want to get just the oil instead of the spray bottle. You can just put it in your own spray bottle. Here are some that you can try.
Lemongrass Essential Oil
Have you heard of lemongrass essential oil?? It is great for a lot of things. It is really helpful at lowering inflammation. Go check out my blog post on joint inflammation and bursitis here! But lemongrass oil is also really good at keeping the mosquitoes and bugs away.
What I like to do is, either open the spray bottle that has the repellant blend in it and put about 40 drops of lemongrass essential oil into the spray bottle and shake it up. Or buy the repellant blend oil and the lemongrass oil and put both in your own spray bottle. For a 2 ounce spray bottle I would put about 40 drops of each of the oils into the spray bottle and then add water to the top! If you have a 4 ounce spray bottle then double the oil drops. Or here is a recipe for a bug repellant bracelet you could use also!
Citronella Essential Oil
You might have heard of citronella for keeping bugs away, and it is filled with chemicals and synthetic stuff. But there is actually a citronella essential oil for natural mosquito control. Of course the essential oil has no chemicals in it if you get the oil from a good quality essential oil company.
So what I do with the oil is bring a diffuser outside (you can get a battery powered one) and put citronella essential oil in it. Then put that diffuser (or maybe a couple) around where you are going to be sitting outside! So much better than those chemical filled tiki torches and such! Then you put on your natural mosquito control repellant and you are set for an evening outside! Here is portable diffuser to try!
What To Do For A Bug Bite
So what if you forget the bug spray? Or what you use the bug spray, but a mosquito just gets through it and bites you? Now you have a bug bite that is super itchy! Don’t worry, there are essential oils to help.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender oil is the very first thing you need as soon as you get a mosquito bite (or any other bug bite). I like to use the lavender oil that is already diluted and in a roller ball bottle from the company I buy oils from. But you could definitely make your own! Here are some rollerball bottles you can try!
Also, lavender is pretty gentle so if you want to, you can just put a drop of lavender oil just directly on the bug bite without diluting at all. Lavender is super soothing so it helps right away with that itch! Read my post about some other great uses for lavender!
Cleansing Blend Essential Oil
Another oil that you can try is cleansing blend. It just really takes the itch out of the bite. And it is just like lavender, you can put just a drop on the bite or you can dilute with coconut oil and put in a roller ball bottle. And roll on the bite.
