There are so many essential oils that can help you with bursitis! First, do you know what bursitis is? Before I get to bursitis essential oils, let me tell you what bursitis is. Basically bursitis is inflammation of the bursa sac. And if you don’t know where the bursa sac is, they are fluid filled sacs all over the body to keep your bones, muscles and tendons from rubbing up against each other.
And the inflammation of the bursa sac happens around the joints, most common the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. Because these are the major joints that you use all the time. So those bursa sacs get all inflamed from using too much. And this is super painful. If you want to find out more about bursitis, go to the the mayo clinic website.
I am going to tell you all about the bursitis essential oils. That will help you (or someone you love) with the pain and inflammation from bursitis.
First Up is Soothing Blend
Anything to do with pain, you need the soothing blend! So we always need to start with this blend. And soothing blend has lots of ways to be used. You can use just the essential oil, either put some drops in your hand and rub your hand on the spot with bursitis. Or you can dilute with coconut oil and put in a roller ball bottle. Then you can roll on all those inflamed spots that hurt. Here are coconut oil I use.
Also, the company that I get my essential oils from has a soothing blend rub. Which is an awesome cream or rub that has the soothing blend in it. And it is great for rubbing on those spots of pain. So definitely a needed bursitis essential oil.
Soothing Blend Capsules
Not sure if you knew, but there are actually soothing blend capsules also. So if you are good with internal use of essential oils. And you are using good quality and pure essential oils. Then you should try soothing blend capsules. They are so convenient and work so awesome. Because you just take one to two capsules. And then the soothing blend will be going to the places in your body where there is pain.
So these are definitely a great option because you do not have to find your oil. Or make any kind of roller ball bottle. The capsules are just so much easier to use.
When In Doubt, Use Frankincense
I have talked about this before, and I will talk about this now. When you are unsure about what to use, try frankincense. This essential oil is super healing and just helps a lot with inflammation. Which is what you need with bursitis. I would not use frankincense by itself because it is so much more helpful with other essential oils. So keep reading to find out what oils you can mix it with. And then at the end of the post see a blend you can make or buy from me.
So frankincense is pretty pricey, especially if you get a good quality frankincense from a good company (which I recommend). So I would dilute if coconut oil for sure. Along with the other oils that will help. Because frankincense is what we call a driving in oil. So frankincense can drive in other oils so that the other essential oils work better. Along with frankincense being healing.
Always Copaiba
Copaiba is a must have of the bursitis essential oils. It is the go to for pain. And one of the biggest symptoms of bursitis is pain. The great thing about copaiba essential oil is that there are a number of ways to use it to help with the pain.
You can always rub the copaiba directly on the joint that is inflamed to help with pain. Or you can put on the bottoms of your feet. Because your feet have the biggest pores in your body. So you can put on the copaiba and it will go to the part of your body that has the pain.
If you are okay taking essential oils internally (as long as they are from a good quality oil company). You can put two drops of copaiba under your tongue for any pain in your body. Or you can put the oil in a veggie capsule and then take it. You can do either of these things two to four times a day. And this can help you with your bursitis.
Lemongrass Essential Oil
So lemongrass is an oil that is great to keep the bugs away BUT it is really amazing for helping with inflammation. And as I have already said, basically what bursitis is, is inflammation in your joints especially the knee, shoulder or elbow. So lemongrass is essential for this. At the end of this post is a blend recipe that has lemongrass in it.
I would not use lemongrass by itself because it will help with the inflammation. But it will not really help with the pain. So you need at least one other essential oil with your lemongrass to help with the bursitis. So you will want to apply the lemongrass and the additional oil directly onto the inflamed joint.
Ever Thought of Cypress?
So cypress essential oil is not one that you think of for helping with pain and inflammation. But it really can be a great oil to help with bursitis. Cypress is an awesome oil for circulation. So it can help with getting blood to circulate to certain parts of the body.
And when you get more blood to parts of the body with inflammation, it helps with your inflammation. Because your blood is working in that area to heal those parts of your body. So cypress has to be a part of your essential oil blend for your bursitis. It is also great for the pain of restless legs. Read about it here!
As I said above, if you blend the oils and use all together, that might work better for your bursitis. So I have an oil blend below that you can make yourself. Of if you want your own roller ball bottle handmade by me, go to my Etsy site!

Dr. Vanessa, I found your website and I have bursitis in both of my hips. I would like to make my own oil blend and want to try your recipe. First of all, I am new to essential oils. Can you simply buy the “soothing blend” or do you have a recipe for that as well? Also, in your bursitis recipe, it is hard to tell if if is 10 drops soothing blend and 5 drops frankincense or is it 15 drops frankincense?

cvwunderlich says
Hi Sandra!
Soothing blend is a combination of oils. It contains Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy and Blue Chamomile. It can be made, but it would be easier for you to buy it already combined. https://www.vanessanaturalworkingmoms.com/ is where you can get it! And let me know if you have questions!
